Katy Elphinstone was born in Lerwick in the Shetland islands. At the age of five she moved with her parents and older sister to live in the community at Findhorn, near Inverness in Scotland, where she lived for four years. Her mother was the head gardener and her father set up a printing press in the community. She then moved with her mother and sister to Galloway in South West Scotland. After five years in Galloway, Katy moved to Edinburgh with her mother where she finished her schooling at James Gillespies high school. Katy's mother Margaret Elphinstone is a successful Scottish novelist. Katy Elphinstone went on to study Fine Art (painting and art history) with Italian at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth.
